Overview

These studies are the fruit of my own experience of snare-drum technique. Some of them are inspired by the symphonic repertoire, others by the rhythmic or technical difficulties inherent in the instrument, while a few modestly aspire to prepare performed for wider and less conventional uses of the instrument.

Student Reviews

"This snare drum systems book has a lot to offer as far as etudes to play and get better as a musician. They are difficult and will help work on rudiments, rolls, flams, accents, and other techniques to help advance a person’s snare playing abilities to a new level. My one reservation would be that it doesn’t seem to have a level-to-level movement in difficulty and focuses more on different techniques to play each piece that’s difficult in its own way. This can be both good and bad for a teacher trying to take a step-by-step approach to teaching in a studio. This book has very little in the way of explanation of how to play the pieces, as far as what the notation means, and other general information on the etudes themselves. Along with this, it does not state what level this is for in any online way of purchasing it due to its difficulty. So it could end up discouraging a student who does not know of the history of Delecluse and Macarez, or that this is a book series that was designed to be played after one works through the other beginning snare drum book for beginning college level or even high school level percussionists. This is more of a student performance edition of this series. I gave it a three-star rating for this reason, it had good information to advance a student’s playing ability, but not much in the way of how to approach these etudes, the true difficulty to a student, or when to start using this etude book for its good performance etudes."-Thomas Scott
