Program Notes
"Soundscapes" for saxophone (alto doubling on tenor) and drum set by Howard J. Buss was written during December 2015 and is dedicated to saxophonist Dr. Barry McGinnis. It is in four movements: Urban Bustle, Blueish Serenity, In Transit, and Spiritosity. The saxophonist plays on an alto in the outer movements and a tenor in the inner two. As the title suggests, Urban Bustle is energetic and at times quite intense. Blueish Serenity had a contemplative, almost mystical quality and resembles a ballad. In the third movement, In Transit, the tenor sax is played unaccompanied. The music has an improvisatory and jazz-like character. The player switches back to alto sax for the final movement, Spiritosity. Following an opening percussion solo, the performers progress through an engaging series of lyrical and developmental sections. In the music one can hear ephemeral references to musical moments from earlier in the composition.
