Program Notes

Tapas is a Sanskrit word meaning “fervor, heat, fire, and energy gained by devoting one’s thoughts and actions toward a particular goal.” In this multi-part composition each section’s goal is achieved through different musical means. Each section is characterized by varying textural, harmonic, and emotional qualities. In addition to the solo voice part, the percussionists are required to use their voices throughout as well.
