These progressive studies are thematically and rhythmically more or less inspired by orchestral parts from the symphonic repertoire. They are meant for students who already have a certain command of technical knowledge, and particularly of rhythmic theory. They will thus improve the technical, rhythmical, and musical qualities of the future timpanist.
Review
Jacques Delecluse's Twenty Studies for Timpani (which in the original French is Vingt Etudes pour Timbales) is a collection of etudes meant to challenge timpanists who already have a significant amount of technical skill and musical knowledge.
Each etude focuses in on the musical aspects of playing the instrument, demanding an exacting amount of detail in dynamics and rhythms - not to mention pitches. Each etude is progressively more difficult than the last, and all of them require four drums. A fifth drum is needed for etudes 18 and 20.
Many of these etudes show up on timpani auditions throughout the world, making this book an invaluable addition to the library of any student timpanist seriously working towards playing in a professional ensemble.
