Description

Vince by Brian Nozny is a creative and colorful percussion ensemble for four or more players exploring the many sounds and timbres possible with traditional cymbals. It was inspired by Nozny's former neighbor who had a very unique accent in which he clipped off the end of his words. The accent is mimicked throughout the work by using various muffling techniques across the ensemble. Players also explore a variety of sustained and muted techniques, multiple playing zones of the cymbal, and multiple implements to manipulate the sound of the instrument. The piece requires players to be honed in to ensemble groove and pulse for their part to fit into the greater musical picture. Vince is an excellent work to expose students to the infinite possibilities available with cymbals.

Performance Notes

Each of the three cymbal players should use a pair of double-sided multipercussion sticks with a stick end and a softer mallet end. within that parameter, however, directors are welcome to get creative with implements as they see fit if they wish to explore other color within the ensemble.
