Program Notes

Premiered in 2005 at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music under the direction of Anthony Cirone

The crossing gate comes to life. The engines lumber over the crossing, struggling to overcome momentum and pick up speed. As the various sections of the train pass over the crossing, their wheels make different rhythms against the rails. First boxcars, then empty coal hoppers, then flatbeds. After the last flatbed, the clacking of the wheels fades and the crossing gate returns to its state of rest. Premiered by the Indiana University Percussion Ensemble in 2005.
