The 15 solos were written as a companion to [[Fundamental Method for Timpani]] with the developing timpanist in mind, but can act as supplementary material to the simultaneous study of any method book. The intent of these pieces is to provide musical material that will give the progressing student a chance to put to practical use his or her developing technical skills, as well as demand a variety of musical styles and contexts. In addition, any of the following solos may be used as either contest or jury pieces. Finally, it is the author's hope that these pieces will be fun for the students to play.

Fundamental Solos For Mallets is a 23-page book containing 11 original solos for intermediate marimba players. The solos are "Modo Nuovo," "Deserted Road," "3 + 6," "Musing," "Escapade," "Daybreak," "Louis Crab," "Adrift," "Dragonfly," "Sojourn" and "Chorale and Variations." Each solo is different from the others and contains a musical and technical challenge. There are two-mallet, three-mallet, and four-mallet solos. As the solos become more difficult, particularly in the four-mallet ones, the player is introduced to mallet independence. A four-octave instrument is needed. From the well-written solos to the easily read music, this excellent book is accessible to intermediate players, and more advanced players could use it for sight-reading. - [[John Beck]] April 2000<ref>[http://www.pas.org PAS.Org] Retrieved 5/19/2012</ref>

Foreword

The 15 solos were written as a companion to Fundamental Method for Timpani with the developing timpanist in mind, but can act as supplementary material to the simultaneous study of any method book.
