Online Review
This multiple percussion solo is written for four tom-toms, a pair of bongos and snare drum. The player needs a pair of double-headed sticks with wood and soft ends. The solo opens with a counterpoint section in which the soft end of one stick contrasts with the wood end. This section moves to a single melodic theme that is played with the wood end of the sticks. The trio is performed with the soft ends of the mallets. Technical demands include single strokes, rolls (both single-stroke and rebound varieties), and independence to play counter-rhythms or contrasting patterns between the hands. There is one passage that requires 3:2 and 4:3 rhythmic patterns. This is an excellent solo for the young percussionist, and with its fairly small setup should be suited for the solo contest or studio recital. - George Frock, August 1999 [1]
