Program Notes

Eugene Novotney was born in Cleveland, Ohio. His self-stated influences are jazz and classical with a healthy dose of Motown rock and roll. He attended the University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music and continued his studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, where he was awarded the Edgar Varese Percussion Award for Outstanding Achievement. As a percussionist himself, the majority of Novotney’s compositions have been for various combinations of percussion instruments.

The two movements of Intentions performed today are Assumption, scored for six triangles, and Proposal, written for three tambourines. Each movement calls for interesting techniques that provide a visually and aurally stimulating performance. These techniques include striking tambourines with hands and knees, fingers, fists, and open palms. Novotney expressly notated many different sticks and beaters in the score to create a wide palette of colors and sounds, and even included several vocal cues utilizing percussion-type sounds. [1]
