Review

This three-movement work is a substantial contribution to percussion ensemble literature. Written for four players, the piece calls for a large number of instruments but most of them fairly standard such as drums, timpani, cymbals, vibes, marimba, xylophone, and accessories. The only instruments that might not be found in an average college program would be crotales, flexatone, and possible double bass bows. The first movement in 4/4 time with the quarter notes marked at 144, is contrapuntal and features multi-pitched sets of drums imitating and interacting with each other. The movement is supported by a steady rhythmic background which passes among the instruments. The second movement, marked "very slowly," is coloristic moving gradually to a climactic height and them dissolving into the material of the opening. In addition to colors of crotales, flexatone, and other accessories, two marimbas and vibes are used, each of the three parts necessitating four mallet technique. The final movement features a driving ostinato against the development of solo lines. The movement increases in speed and intensity until suddenly thematic material from the second movement appears followed by a rush to the final cadence. Although four complete, well-printed scores are provided, there are several page turn problems. - Michael Combs, February, 1982[1]
