Annotation

Written programmatically, the music in the opening of this piece, using extreme dynamics, and static tones emulate the crashing of waves on a beach. The notational style used reflects that of Abe’s piece Michi, in which 32nd notes provide a rich harmonic texture to which melodic notes sit on top of. Even the linear lines of the bass as the piece progress move up and down very naturally as the beginning does. Melodies soar around the marimba as the programmatic waves continue to crash against the surf, and the piece returns to the original mood from before of double stops and static notes with extreme dynamics emulate the sound of waves. The composer can be heard playing this on her CD: Marimba Fantasy. This piece is published in a collection titled: Keiko Abe: Works for Marimba, and is published by the yamaha Music Foundation-Schott.
