Review

This work has been performed a number of times by Ms. Abe on her American tours and, although it has only recently been released by Music for Percussion, it is becoming a standard in the repertoire of advanced marimba performers. The first 5 pages consist of rapid 32nd notes requiring the use of 4 mallets. A middle section in a more homophonic style, itself contrasted by several tempo changes, leads to the concluding section of rapidly moving 32nd note patterns. The 12-page composition should at least be explored by every serious marimba student. - Michael Combs, October 1980[1]

Annotation

The title of this piece: michi, is a Japanese word that translates to the english word: path. Written with this title in mind, Keiko Abe takes the performer on a journey with this piece. Michi is written with a different notational style than that of Dream of the Cherry Blossoms, or Variations on Japanese Children’s Songs, this piece has a thick layer of 32nd notes providing a harmonic base in which a linear line of notes float and are meant to ‘resonate’ over the top. This form of writing carries through until the performer comes to the Risoluto section, where a mixed meter style commences, using the upper and middle range of the marimba. The music once again continues using the heavy harmonic layer as it did before, this time exploring some new melodic ideas. Keiko Abe does allow for improvisation, and many well-known marimbists take advantage of this such as Evelyn Glennie on her CD: Rhythm Song. There is also a recording of the composer performing this on Keiko Abe’s CD: Marimba Fantasy. This piece is published by Colla Voce.
