Program Notes

This piece was inspired by a Chinese poem written by Lee Shin from the Tang dynasty. It is about a powerful musician who plays a wind instrument made of wood and leaves. When he plays, the magical sound lures the spirits in the mountains, birds in the sky, animals in the forest, and even the winds, clouds, dust and rain dance with the music. These images suggested to me the idea of writing a dramatic composition with a calling to the forces of nature. I borrowed the Chinese word Ming, meaning euphony or resonance, to depict an exotic sound environment created by a single performer with multiple instruments. The soloist plays both the role of the instigator and the enchanted natural or supernatural beings. Besides showcasing the great virtuosity and musicality of the performer, this work also combines some theatrical elements such as movements and vocalization, from Buddist-like chanting to the intense Peking Opera style.

This composition was commissioned by percussionist Christine Aiyun Huang through a grant from the Ontario Arts Council[1]
