Program Notes

Review

MIRAGE is written for the following percussion instruments: vibes, snare drum, 2 marimbas (one should be a 4 1/3 octave instrument), bells, bass drum, 3 tom-toms, bell tree, 4 timpani, suspended cymbals and the solo violoncello. The parts are well layed out so there is not a lot of movement during the composition. The vibe player must be able to improvise on a given set chords. Except for a senza misura section and a few measures of solo playing, the violoncello acts more as a part of the ensemble rather than a solo instument. For the most part the printing is easy to read; though being hand written rather than printed by typewriter. This is a work of medium difficulty and would be excellent for a college or a good high school percussion ensemble. - John Beck[1]
