Program Notes

For a history of the origin of my "Piece Percussionique" series, see Piece Percussionique No.1. This one, the third in the series, is in three connected movements: Allegretto (con fugato), Andante and Allegro (rondo). This composition progresses from humour in the first movement that subsides in the Andante, to the seriousness of the Allegro, although it actually has a prankish drum rhythm as its rondo theme. A xylophone cadenza separates the first two movements, both of which have strange musical and quasi theatrical gestures interpolated into rather conventional rhythmic writing. By the third movement no theatrical gestures remain. But its rapid 6/8 tempo (in fast 2) bring the work to a close with great virtuosity.[1]

premiere: 12 September 12, 1966, Baird Hall, SUNY, Buffalo, New York, James Santella, Jan Williams and William A. Thiele
