Program Notes

for the 2013 ESU Music Day Percussion Section.

Praesepe M.44 was written for the 2013 ESU Music Day Percussion Ensemble. This is a day where as many as 40-50 musicians come together and perform chamber music with each other. This piece was designed for the middle school students to perform for the closing concert. The piece is written to allow multiple players playing a variety of instruments on each of the mallet and percussion parts.

Trapezium Cluster cluster of stars in the heart of the Orion Nebula. The work is a high school level work that could be learned in a few rehearsals. The solo timpani part has the performer improvising sounds using glisses and other excotic sounds that the performer can invent to put into the piece. Most of the composition features one of the more famous etudes in the Saul Goodman Modern Method for Tympani book - The cross over exercise. There are three sections identified in the etude that are highlighted in this feature. Each representation should increase tempo and ultimately be performed as fast as the soloist is willing to go. This piece is meant to honor the timpani lineage of the Goodman tradition and to highlight the value of his technical writings and musicality.
