Online Review
Rich O’Meara’s Tune for Mary 0. is a lively work that reminds one of a traditional Irish melody. This four mallet marimba solo is based on an original jig and would be appealing to almost any intermediate level mallet player. The work is in five main sections with the main theme reccurring once. All of the sections contain an Irish flavor. This work would be an excellent choice for intermediate level marimba players because of the strong use of lateral motion in both hands. The composer keeps both hands in comfortable intervals (4ths and 5ths) and the tempo is demanding enough to develop good lateral control in the instrument. Some sticking choices are suggested by the composer but the majority are left to the discretion of the performer, The melodic content also offers the performer excellent opportunies for phrase conrast and shaping. Tune for Mary 0. would work well as a lighter work on any recital, but most college students would probably not use it as senior recital material. However, it is a welcome addition to the intemediate level marimba literature. - Mark Ford, Fall 1986 [1]
