Program Notes

Variations for Marimba (2005) is for the advanced marimba soloist. It is essentially a “classical” set of variations on a theme, however the “theme” is elusive and evolves as the variations progress. Based on the compositional techniques of Béla Bartók, it is a profound tribute to the Hungarian composer and his work. His use of geometric proportion, bridge form, and synthetic scale models are just a few of the techniques used to determine the direction of the piece and create a unique tonal landscape.

Dedicated to Sandi Rennick, this is a virtuosic work for 5-octave marimba solo using advanced 4-mallet techniques. Advanced techniques employed include complicated double lateral stroke combinations, independent one-handed rolls, and large interval spreads. It is a challenge to the advanced marimba student and seasoned performer alike
