Overview

If one deals with old school works for timpani, one can get the impression that in earlier times it was simply accepted that people had a "strong" and a "weak" hand. It is probably thanks to the American rudimentary drum school, among other things, that the left hand was generally able to emancipate itself as a drummer in the 20th century and was accordingly increasingly used on an equal footing.

And yet it is of course still the case that each of us has a slightly more skilled, faster, stronger and therefore favored hand, not only in everyday life but also when timpani. And the other hand is in most cases the left hand.

The present 13 etudes offer an aid to compensate for this. They should only be played with the left hand. Of course, left-handers can also use the whole thing for their right hand. In this case, I recommend practicing Etude No. 8 not on the top three timpani but on the bottom three timpani of the 4-movement.
