Overview

Basically, comparison and competition are far removed from the essence of music. Nevertheless, the need for a selection process for filling an orchestral position has given rise to the procedure of the so-called "examination". For the applicants as well as for those who can and should make a selection, this prelude is always an exciting exceptional situation: In the short time that each applicant is granted for the presentation, it must succeed, an authentic picture not only the technical qualities of the game, but if possible the entire artistic personality. The literature presented should therefore be carefully selected. In the case of the timpani, it can be seen that the technical demands on the musician have increased considerably since the beginning of the 20th century. Nevertheless, auditions over the past few decades have shown that it is often precisely the supposedly technically less demanding passages that reveal many of the decisive fundamental playing qualities. This is the case, for example, in the literature of the Classical and Romantic eras because of their degree of popularity and their transparency.

"Pauken-Probespiel" by Arend Weitzel (Bochumer Symphoniker) and Marek Stefula (Gewandhausorchester Leipzig) combines for the first time meaningful orchestral passages from different epochs, numerous piano reductions, a selection of demanding etudes, as well as suggestions for roll recitals in one volume. The result is a comprehensive and well thought-out compilation of literature for the successful preparation and implementation of auditions.

The orchestra passages have been arranged chronologically according to the time of the premiere of the individual works. This should facilitate the music-historical and stylistic classification.

Errata

"Timpani audition" - page 12 - 4th movement of Beethoven's 5th symphony - the tempo designation must read: Halbe = 84

"Timpani audition" - page 15 - 2nd movement of Beethoven's 9th symphony - in the 3rd, 6th, 9th and 13th bar after the letter E the accents on beat 1 are not correct. Instead, a full-bar diminuendo wedge must be added to each of these bars.

"Timpani audition" - page 26 - 1st movement of Tchaikovsky's 4th symphony - bar 340 - the last note in this bar must be a "c".

"Timpani audition" - page 29 - Salome - in "Salome's Dance" the reference "small timpani" must be supplemented by "with wooden mallet".

"Timpani audition" - page 63 - Der Rosenkavalier - 2nd bar after number 256 - First eighth note: the top note in the right hand must be an "f".
