Since the invention of the pedal timpani (approx. 1880), retuning the timpani with a pedal has become a natural part of timpani playing technique. In individual cases it may be an alternative to surround yourself with a large number of drums in order to reduce the necessary retuning processes to a minimum. From the point of view of making work easier, however, this only appears to be an advantage. It cannot be assumed that a timpani (particularly with natural skins) will always reliably and precisely maintain the tuned tone over a long period of time. Therefore, the player must constantly keep an eye on the intonation of each timpani. So this means: The more cramming, the more control work. Another problem when using many timpani can be that the aftertaste of several timpani played in quick succession mixes dissonantly and thus disturbingly. It is not always possible to counteract this phenomenon with dampening. Here, too, the intonation-safe use of the pedals can offer an elegant solution in many cases. So it's well worth dealing with this special area of ​​the timpani "craft" in detail in order to be prepared for all eventualities. The exercises in this booklet are intended to help you with this.
