Program Notes

Review

This short percussion quintet is scored for bongos/snare drum, four anvils, four tom-toms, small bass drum, and marimba. (Except for one note, an A-sharp, the marimba part can be played on a 4-octave instrument with the player using three mallets.) The tempo is steady throughout (quarter note = 100), and it alternates between 4/4 and 3/8 except for the last several measures, which are all in 3/8. A basic theme first stated in the bongos and snare drum is prevalent throughout the composition and is tossed about among the other players. None of the parts are terribly difficult but they are challenging enough to make them interesting. "Mirage" is well-written and would be excellent for a good high school ensemble or as a beginning piece on a college percussion ensemble concert. - John Beck, June 1999[1]
