This book starts out with the tambourine. It gives a list of wind ensemble and orchestra pieces that require tambourine. Then it gives a brief history of the tambourine, what to look for when buying one, and performance techniques. It also includes how to do shake rolls, thumb rolls, grace notes, and playing with the fist or knee. There are playing examples to do these techniques as well. The triangle, bass drum, and cymbals are similarly explained in this format. After, there are 17 percussion accessory instruments (claves, temple blocks, woodblocks, ratchet, tam-tam, guiro, etc.) that give a brief background of the instrument, what to look for when wanting to purchase, and playing examples. This book also includes pictures of each instrument and how to hold or play it.

Review by Ashley Feist: I think this book is very helpful. A beginning percussionist could learn the basics of these instruments. I think it goes into enough detail most of the time, but the reader might have a few questions to better understand something. A weakness is that it never talks about the snare drum which is a very important part of percussion. I think this book is helpful, but not better than Gary Cook’s book. Rating: IV
